Rochester Michigan school kids Striiv for Charity

Holy Family Regional School
Rochester Hills, Michigan

We can’t wait to get started!

As spring arrives with sunshine and warm weather, I am thrilled that Holy Family Regional School in Rochester Hills, Michigan is starting a school-wide walking program. Beginning April 23rd, over 1 thousand students from all grades, kindergarten through grade eight, will have the chance to participate in a four week program during their recess. The walking program was created by the school’s Parent Teacher Group to encourage students to choose healthy and active lifestyles.

Each day our students will be joined by special guest walkers from the school and the greater Rochester community. We can’t wait to see who will show up! The guest walkers will be wearing Striivs to help calculate the total steps of the participants. The entire Holy Family community is excited to turn our steps into donations that will benefit other people as well. Taking care of ourselves and others is a major theme at our school, so this program fits perfectly with that mission.

Our school, HFRS, is a Catholic elementary school located in south east Michigan. Founded in 1980, our school is known throughout the community as a School of Excellence. Our students are called and inspired to achieve their full potential in all aspects of their lives.

I will keep you posted on how our program is going and all the positive results!

Updates:
Day 1: Our Holy Family Regional School Wildcat Walking Program got off to a great start. Day 1 was a HUGE success. Over 500 students took part in spite of some blustery winds. Our students were joined by our principal and assistant principals as special guests to kick off the program. Some students even sang songs as they walked. The estimated combined total of steps for all the participants was an amazing 1,582,998 steps (300 miles) WOW! The kids kept talking about how excited they are to see how many donations they can earn! Thank you to STRIIV for making the tracking fun and meaningful. Look at this cute picture from Day 1.

May 1 Update: Our first full week of the Holy Family Walking Program is behind us. It has been an enormous success, far exceeding all expectations. With the encouragement of our guest walkers, the children have logged nearly 825 miles. The sunny weather sure helps and children at every grade level are excited to take part in the program. We have traveled the equivalent of walking from Rochester, NY to Cleveland, OH and then on to Charleston, WV. Way to go Trackers!!!!

May 10 Update: After a washout on Monday’s Holy Family Walking Program, 460 kids rallied together on Wednesday and turned in some impressive numbers! Both campuses walked a cumulative total of 1,665 miles. We have earned the following Striiv trophies on our pedometer; Stairway to Heaven – 35,000 steps, Beat your Average – 133 minutes of activity logged and Burn a Soda – 150 calories. Way to go Trackers, can’t wait to see what Friday brings.

June – End of School year: HOLY FAMILY STUDENTS GO THE DISTANCE!

With over 5000 donations earned and the opportunity to become a more health conscious school – we are thrilled to report that our Holy Family recess walking program was an enormous success!

We loved tracking our progress with our Striiv units each day and totaling up our miles and awards. The ability to earn clean water for families who don’t have all the same blessings as us was an extra motivation for the students to get involved. Over 85% of our students participated in the program and individual classrooms even started challenging each other to friendly participation competitions. Impressive!

With each day the kids gain a genuine understanding of how daily activities like walking can really add up and lead to a healthier life. Reporting the Striiv awards that the guest walkers earned on their pedometers was a highlight of the program. Some favorite trophies were the Statue of Liberty, Burned a Banquet, and Completed a Marathon. What a great way to demonstrate the distances and benefits that were being achieved!

With such great results, our school is already planning to carry on the walking program next fall. How exciting that we will continue to offer a healthy group activity for the children to choose at recess.
Thanks Striiv – we couldn’t have done it without you!
